The Problems With Clickbait

Whether it's using hashtags on Instagram or using retweeting on Twitter, each person has a way of getting into the algorithm on social media. Some social media platforms are harder to get into the algorithm, such as YouTube. YouTube doesn't project videos in a way Twitter and Instagram do. In order to find a video it has to be searched or related to a previous video. Another it is difficult is because it is a video, not a picture. Because it is a video there needs to be a thumbnail to draw in viewers. That is where clickbait comes into play.

Clickbait is when a YouTuber puts something interesting or eye popping unrelated to the video into the thumbnail to bring in viewers. Most of the time they hope people fall into their trap and enjoy the video anyways, even if the video doesn't have any correlation to the thumbnail. It works very often because people forget about the thumbnail quickly because they are being brought into a new topic. Casey Neistat, a YouTuber, said “Clickbait titles, catchy thumbnails, and shareable content are necessary if this is something you want to do as a job” in one of his videos. Clickbait is a deceptive way to join the YouTube algorithm.
