"The Reaper of Death"

Adam Jimenez

Seeing that image with that title, it be hard for anyone not to click to find out more. The full article title is "Canada’s Newest Tyrannosaur Is Named for a ‘Reaper of Death’", now we may live in Texas but Canada is one of our neighboring countries. Covered by the New York Times this is an effective strategy for hooking in readers. The sub-headline stating, "The specimen is older than T. Rex and other famous members of its family, which could fill in this apex predator’s family tree," keeps the reader hooked and eager to learn more on this new creature. By using familiar terms it gives the reader an idea of the subject matter, as well as piquing their curiosity. This dinosaur's scientific name is "Thanatotheristes degrootorum", which is not only a mouthful but also just visually unappealing. Using it's nickname and artist rendition is more visually appealing, which is why I've noticed a trend of even scientific articles using more clickbaity titles to lure in readers.
