The Time for Equality is Now

anniegrace

It's no secret that journalists have a tough job especially in todays media, but there is a targeted group of journalists who have a particularly hard time getting their job done. The people of color in our media face constant obstacles and have to prove themselves worthy time and time again. Tonya Mosley once said "Trust me — every person of color in your newsroom has a story about how a manager questioned either their news judgment, their diction, or whether they could be neutral or objective.” She then goes on to talk about neutrality and our "flawed thinking." She recommends that as we head into 2020 it's important as news rooms are attempting to become more diverse they need to listen to the colored journalists and "Get rid of the idea of “bothsidesism” — and more importantly, false equivalency. Acknowledging the rights and humanity of people is not a “side.” The cost of being neutral is an ill-informed public that is distrustful of what we do."
