The lack of diversity in our local news outlets right now is absolutely unacceptable. Throughout the local media, news outlets preach how important diversity is to change and improving the community but they lack the initiative to make this happen. Aaron Foley, director of the Black Media Initiative at CUNY's Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, explains this double-standard in "Diversity gains haven't shown up in local news."
An example of this nonsense would be The Detroit News. In a city with a large African-American community, one of, if not the biggest, news outlets only has one African-American commentator. In a new election year, The Detroit News preached day-to-day that the African-American, Latino, and Arab-American votes were important for change in the community. Aaron Foley says that "What general-market local newsrooms fail to understand is that readership is inextricably tied to representation." He follows this statement by claiming national newsrooms are much closer to tying it together than local newsrooms. Therefore, he covers an interesting solution in his article that might help fix that issue. His proposed solution is to bring more collaboration between the local news and the people of the community so that everyone understands the perspective of the community. I believe this solution will increase diversity by establishing a more commune approach to media and get rid of the unacceptable lack of diversity in common local news.
