The subscription model is one major issue facing journalists today. By locking up articles by acclaimed journalists and writers behind a paywall, companies are stripping the ability of the journalists to tell the stories they want to tell. Nowadays, all I can get from New York Times articles are the headlines, and a quote or two that is visible near the top of the page. Instead of discussing the article, there seems to be a growing focus on “creating soundbites and catchy headlines to draw readers in.” As most news platform are mostly digital nowadays, which has only increased over the past year due to the spread of the covid pandemic, this paywall is becoming a burden on the people that want to keep up to date. Its mirroring the modern-day streaming television wars: every platform is charging for different shows, effectively killing the point of cutting cords from the original satellite cable providers.
