On November 8, 2016, Donald Trump became the 45th president of the United States. Without any political background, he beat Hillary Clinton “in an election that was bitterly partisan”. However, most pre-election polls showed a Clinton Victory. Trump won the election because he appealed to “rural voters, evangelicals, working-class whites, and the disenfranchised”. In order to win, 270 electoral votes are needed by the presidential candidate to win. In the end, the total number of electoral votes Trump received was 304 while Clinton received 227. “The Clinton-Kaine ticket, however, won the popular vote by a margin of nearly 3 million votes over Trump-Pence”.
