In the last year news outlets have had to scramble to find other sources of revenue as income from advertisers has been declining. In her article titled "Are platforms a bridge or a lifeline?" Nushin Rashidan explains the prior relationship between technology platforms such as google or Facebook, and news outlets. She states that it is near impossible to find a newsroom that hasn't had some form of training interaction with google or Facebook. She explains how google and Facebook have increased their support for journalism and are often helping "bridge gaps." She also however explains how a newsroom shutdown in Youngstown, Ohio was replaced by a different newsroom funded by google within the year."As the Tow Center warned in its third report on the relationship between platforms and publishers last month, platforms’ journalism initiatives to foster sustainability also serve to expand platforms’ power over the news industry"(Rashidan). She concludes by posing the question if tech platforms decide what newsrooms live and die.
