Why is Fake News Easy to Spread?

Writer's picture: Savannah Campbell Savannah Campbell

After searching the keywords "Fake news" I read an article over the fake news being spread about the corona virus. In the article, "Here Are Simple Tips to Help You Avoid Fake Coronavirus News" by Samantha Vanderslott, Vanderslott states that " The proliferation of fake news about the COVID-19 pandemic has been labelled a dangerous "infodemic". Fake news spreads faster and more easily today through the internet, social media and instant messaging." This is due to people not checking to see if an article matches up with the criteria of being fake news. False information is far more likely to spread because of how "scary" it sounds (i.e. if it sounds this bad then it must be true).
