Women's March

Anju Canty

The Women’s March occurred on January 21, 2017, and “the purpose of the march was to advocate for women’s rights.” The march was also held to protest the treatment of immigrants and refugees. The women were inspired by Martin Luther King Jr’s nonviolent protests and wanted to spread the message of unity. “Participants exercised their First Amendment rights to free speech, assembly, and petition.” The women who marched also held signs with slogans on them. In addition, high profile speakers and activists were a part of the march located in Washington DC. This event inspired similar marches to develop in all seven continents. “From Stockholm to Buenos Aires to New Delhi to Cape Town, marchers publicized their opposition to the Trump administration and pushed for women’s rights.”
