In 2017, an Italian politician began a new sort of program in 8,000 schools: to teach kids about fake news and how to prevent the spreading of false information. The plan is to work with the Ministry of education and have teachers and students learn about verifying news and their sources and encouraging them to make blogs and videos online to share with other people around the world about the effects and influences that fake news has. At the time, some people had doubts that this plan would work. The politician responded that "[b]ecause if in class you create a video or start a blog on this specific issue, I think it can become sort of a competition among the students." This plan shows that many social media sites can't always control fake news, and will need their communities to help hunt down fake news.
